Cel Based Animation is the movement of a graphic, as in a cartoon? It is the result of making a sequence of drawing called frames and showing them rapidly one after another. Animation is frequently set at 30 frames per second or 9000 frames for five minute cartoon. This creates a smooth illusion of movement. The term cell comes from the word cellulose which was the material used to make animated film.
Right: Flip books (kinegraphs) were one precursor to modern movies. These are stll used these days, usually drawn by children on the corners of books.

Left: On the left you can see the frames that go to making a very famous animation by Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904). I have changed these single images into an animated gif.
Here you can see hopw the individual images have been played together to create an illusion of movement. This is the principle behind the movies we all watch at the cinema.
Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) was particularly famous for having been the first to photograph a horse in motion and to find that at one point in time all four feet are off the ground.
